Movie and TV show recommendations

After the surgery, I'm going to be doing a whole lot of sitting around.  And since I won't be able to use my arms much (or at least for the first few weeks), that rules out reading books, magazines, and knitting.

So that leaves me with a lot of hours to fill with movies and TV shows.  Sure, I can listen to audio books, podcasts, and music, but I'm not a very good book listener.  My mind tends to wander and I lose track of the story.

I already have a few TV shows lined up (Breaking Bad, Big Love, In Treatment, and Mad Men).  And there's always crap on TV if I want to channel surf.

I need some good recommendations for movies.  Good ones for me, and good ones for watching with other people (because as much as I want to watch all 5 hours of the BBC Pride and Prejudice miniseries, Ian may not).  So click "comment" below and let me know your recent faves.  Give me the name, and a brief gist of it, or why you think it's good, or whatever.

Here's a running list of a few I know I want to see:
The Science of Sleep (Tristan and Hilary, I'm stealing your copy)
Coraline (I have it, just haven't watched it yet)
that Denys Arcand movie that is the sequel to the Barbarian Invasions
Cherry Blossoms
State of Play (just finished the BBC miniseries - thanks Kinnon - now must watch crap Hollywood remake version)
Happy Go Lucky (again, have it, but haven't watched it yet)
Adventureland (Ian said he wasn't interested, so Ansley, you're gonna have to watch this one with me)
Sunshine Cleaning

  1. I'm not sure whether you like sci-fi, but BBC's Torchwood: Children of Earth is a 5-part miniseries, taking place in present day when aliens come to earth and demand 10% of the Earth's child population. Definitely more on the dramatic side than cheesy like Dr. Who, which also I'm a fan of as well.

Let the Right One In: the Swedish vampire movie involving two 12 years. Story and camera work are beautiful.

  2. There was a reality show on Canadian TV last year that had the star guy from Torchwood on it, so now I can't watch that series without laughing at him! I have heard that it's good though.

Ewwww vampires. Yuck. Ansley would love it.

I never watched BSG, so maybe I could start that from the beginning...

  3. Oh yeah, I've so already seen "Let the right one in"...it was really good. I told you about it a while ago Ave, but you probs wouldn't like it.

I'm so down for Coraline and Adventureland.

Hey, I'd be in for starting BSG from the beginning...apparently we're both missing something big by not watching that one.

Let's rent the latest straight-to-video Bring it On movie!!! And "Fired Up".

  4. YES! Kinnon says she wants to start with the BSG too. I'm going to download it so we can watch from the beginning. Let the nerd stuff begin!

  5. I've been really enjoying Nurse Jackie... ohhh Edie Falco. Also if you haven't watched it already, Six Feet Under is absolutely incredible, and fun for the whole family (kidding, but seriously it's so good).

And if you're looking for laughs, I'm sure you've probably seen them but I've been really enjoying the following mindless comedies these last few days: Role Models, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and I Love You, Man. Nothing like a little Paul Rudd or Seth Rogen to make my day.
