Wow! Thanks. That was really helpful. I'm glad a lot of the range of motion in your arms was there right away. I was wondering if I'd be going for days without being able to hold a book or brush my own teeth or wipe my (ahem).
More of my endless questions to answer at your leisure if you don't mind:
If you wanted to do some leg lifts and just move your lower body around a bit in bed, did that hurt your abdomen too much at first? You've mentioned that anything that stretches the incision would hurt but what about contracting the muscles?
Was tightness and an unhealed inscision the limiting factor in sitting/standing fully upright? What did they say to do to work on getting your back straight and when did they let you start trying?
How long does the restriction on lifting and reaching upwards last?
Does vibration cause pain? (this is a weird Kathak dance-based question). If you drum your heels on the floor rapidly does it cause discomfort? What about jumping (provided you were feeling energetic)? If you jump up and down would there be pain?
Glad it sounds like the really hellish bit of the recovery was only four days or so. This is really helping me feel less scared about potentially choosing a DIEP.
Sooooo..... you could play drums in Rock Band, for example??? Sorry, I'm just being silly. I'm so glad you're on the mend! You're a trooper, Ave! :) xoxo
I have a BRCA 1 genetic mutation (aka "The Breast Cancer Gene") that puts me at a high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. I inherited the gene from my mother, who died of ovarian cancer at the age of 52.
I'm 29 years old. I do not have cancer. I don't want to have cancer. So I'm doing everything I can, including a double mastectomy, to prevent it before it even starts. I'm having my surgery on November 12.
For more information about BRCA, visit the FORCE website.
