After wearing the same ratty padded bra pretty much every day for 8 months, I finally went out and got fitted for new bras. My foobies are pretty much the same size and shape as my real boobies used to be, but there are subtle changes. I'm still the same bra size, but each bra by each company fits differently, and it was time to go and try a bajillion of them and find the right fit.
I went to Melmira Bra and Swimsuits way the heck up Yonge Street, past Lawrence. Not easy to get to. But definitely worth it. Melmira has an insane inventory, so odds are, they're going to be able to find something for anyone. And their bra fitting specialists are lovely. So helpful and understanding. They specialize in mastectomy bras and can take any bra and convert it to a mastectomy bra (for those that have a prosthesis). I don't need a mastectomy bra per se, but I do need someone who can help me find the right bra for my new shape, including my weird "the headlights are always on" nipples.
I spent about an hour at Melmira, as my bra fitter brought me more and more and more bras to try on. It wasn't easy, but eventually I found a simple nude T-shirt bra, and a nice lacy black bra. Both are from France, feature excellent construction and detail, and fit me perfectly. And best of all - even though the bras I bought aren't technically mastectomy bras, they were able to give me "surgical bra" pricing, which means no sales tax. And my health insurance might cover the cost if I submit the receipt, since I can technically claim new bras as a medical expense.
Oh, I almost forgot - the bra fitter I was working with complimented me on my breast reconstruction. She said it was one of the best looking breast reconstructions she's ever seen, and wanted to know the name of my surgeon. She said that sometimes people ask, and it's good for them to know. So I heartily recommended Dr. Hofer. And I agreed with her - my breast reconstruction really does look good. Now that my nipples have "settled down", and my scars are starting to fade, I'm pretty pleased with the way I look. And I started wearing a bikini this summer! It has pretty full bottoms with a little skirt to cover my tummy scar (it looks better than it sounds). But it features a full halter top and a bare belly button. I haven't worn a bikini since I was 16 years old, and it feels really good.
